Contactless technology is being used to modernize a transportation system in a county of Miami. The new contactless card replaces a fare collection system that has been in place in Miami-Dade for more than 25 years.
The contactless chip cards are called EASY Card and are being used for 22 Metrorail stations and nearly 900 buses. Within seven months of moving forward with the chip based technology the bus fare collection equipment was operating. This summer contactless parking management systems followed. There is also an automatic passenger counting system to keep track of riders. The counting system is one of the perks of using contactless technology.
The EASY Card contactless system can be used to pay all transit fares, including transfers between bus and rail, as well as parking. The EASY Ticket, a recyclable paper smart card with an embedded contactless chip, is available for visitors.
