New Nigerian plastic card serves as ID and payment card
A new Nigerian state ID card will be the first in the world to function as both an identification document and a payment card.
The card, being produced by payment processing company Interswitch, will incorporate smartcard technology that will enable cardholders to use their plastic ID cards for electronic payments.
Interswitch has announced the new cards will utilize tools produced by the company's partner, identifications solution company Precise Biometrics.
In addition to the new Nigerian ID cards, Precise Biometrics recently launched several new identification innovations, including a tool for integration of fingerprint recognition on PC and Mac platforms, a biometric login solution for Microsoft Windows 7 and a tool for integration of standardized March-on-Card.
Precise Biometrics also recently announced its intention to provide biometric solutions for mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets.
As a growing number of companies indicate their intention to produce contactless-enabled mobile payment solutions, device security is becoming a central concern.
Mobile device manufacturer Research In Motion recently announced it plans to explore incorporating mobile payment solutions into its BlackBerry devices.
