A line of coffee shops in the UK have started accepting contactless payments to create a more convenient payment method
A coffee shop chain in the UK has recently begun a smartcard contactless program to modernize its payment systems.
AMT Coffee, which has 65 locations across the UK, will install smartcard readers that allow customers to tap their credit or debit cards on the device for payments of up to $24, instead of waiting for a receipt or typing in a PIN number. As the coffee shops had previously only accepted cash, the smartcard payment solution was brought in to settle the company’s convenience concerns regarding card-based payments.
"Before April this year, none of our branches accepted debit or credit cards," said Jon Hassall, chief operating officer at AMT Coffee. "But the speed of contactless persuaded us it was a must have for a coffee retailer in busy railway stations."
The contactless program at AMT coffee reveals the convenience of smartcart technology in business operations, as the company had previously avoided any plastic card payments because of its focus of being a speedy and convenient coffee shop located at train stations and airports.
Smartcards have been implemented for convenience as plastic card payment systems continue to grow throughout global economies. Earlier this month, a smartcard program was announced to modernize the universally cash-based economy in Kenya, providing solutions for business and transit payments.
