The IBIA recently re-focused its mission to include biometric provisions against identity theft and other important issues

A recent ruling on the International Biometrics and Identification Association’s mission places a higher priority on the use of biometric identification.

The association re-focused its mission to focus on creating new methods for determining identity in response to growing issues involving identity theft, illegal immigration and homeland security. The ruling will bring identification industry stakeholders into a single organization to collaborate on creating stronger identification methods for identity threats facing major industries and important business and government operations.

Officials with the organization recently expressed hope for the future of biometric identification technology for security purposes. Tovah LaDier, IBIA’s managing director, said "with mature biometric and other technologies, we can most certainly stem the tide of identity fraud and reverse the overwhelming statistics we continue to see."

"With the clear global need for identification and authentication of individuals, IBIA’s new mission will help consumers, businesses and governments find solutions that address business needs and enhance security, privacy, productivity and convenience," he added.

Government officials in the U.S. have recently stressed the importance of biometric ID cards to national security. Last week, Colorado Republican senatorial candidate Ken Buck called for the implementation of a biometric ID card system to battle illegal immigration into the country.
