Smartcards will make shopping and parking easier for residents of a Boston suburb
Residents of Brookline, Massachusetts are now able to pay for both parking and shopping with the release of a new smart debit card.
PXT Payments is issuing smartcards to the town’s residents with applications for discounts at more than 500 retail stores and restaurants in the area, as well as a method to pay at the town’s parking meters. The company issued the plastic cards in Brookline, a town of 57,000 with easy access to Boston, with the parking feature to ensure residents in the area will be able to use the card at commercial outlets, as they are offered a solution to parking payment issues.
Business owners in the area recently explained the program’s benefits to retail operations. David Leschinsky, owner of participating Brookline company Eureka Puzzles, said "we’re thrilled to be able to offer incentives for our customers to shop here, and let them reload their smart debit cards here."
Regarding the parking payment application, he added the cards "provide us with a way of helping our customers fund their transactions and avoid parking tickets."
Smartcards have been implemented to parking systems in other cities, as well. Authorities in Charleston, South Carolina recently finished integrating smartcard readers on all of the city’s parking meters.
