Texas hospital implements ID badges to boost security

19635832 300 Texas hospital implements ID badges to boost securityThe need for increased security forced a hospital in Big Spring, Texas to require all workers to carry plastic ID cards at all times and to gain entrance into the building, according to the Midland Reporter Telegram in a recent report.

The West Texas VA Medical Center purchased the system and handed out the badges in mid-December. The hospital also cited an increase in efficiency as a primary aim of the new system.

Across the U.S. two-thirds of hospitals used similar systems and the majority believe that the new system has resulted in greater efficiency and security. To ensure security, cards of workers who no longer work at the facility are shredded to defend against any potential security breach.

"We don’t want any chances of the card still being out there and active," hospital Information Security Officer McKinley told the news provider. "The goal is to be completely rolled out by September."

"It’s an on-going process," HR specialist Teresa Thompson added.

Kyocera announced recently that it developed a new printhead for ID badges that will make the process more efficient and reliable. Companies hesitant to make the shift are quickly running out of reasons for their resistance.
