Traditional methods for maintaining records, sending medical forms and scheduling appointments required they be completed by physically handing out papers. Now, smart card technology has simplified and streamlined the process.
Critical patient information can now be placed inside a microchip embedded into plastic ID cards that staff and patients can carry around their neck on a lanyard. Although the new developments bring challenges, such as keeping the information safe, especially if the card is lost or stolen, it also increases efficiency by letting the doctors gain easier access to patient information, Healthcare Global reported.
The smart cards have proven to shorten patient registration time by hastily retrieving data and eliminating otherwise unnecessary paperwork. Since everything is digital, officials also believe that the cards can reduce the mistakes made by medical staff, such as misreading handwriting, the news source stated.
According to the Smart Card Alliance, the use of these devices can also eliminate duplicate and overlaid records while synchronizing data from multiple sources. As the healthcare industry continues to use smart cards, efficiency is expected to increase while errors are erased.
