Driver License Kiosks Allow Drivers to Renew Own ID Card

New automated kiosks for processing driver’s license renewals and replacements are being rolled out in Mississippi. The stations, created by L-1 Identity Solutions Inc., are designed to streamline Department of Motor Vehicle operations, as half of all license transactions relate to replacements or renewals.

Customers who use the self-serve a href=”http://www.idsuperstore.com/card-printers-c-2.html title=”ID Cards Printing Machine”>ID machine, touch a screen menu and are lead through a series of prompts to securely enter personal information that will be used to locate their record in the DMV system. The kiosk then takes a photo and employs a form of biometrics as it performs a one-to-one facial recognition match against the system’s existing photo to verify identity.

Once identity details are confirmed, the consumer’s credit or debit payment is processed on the kiosk using a magnetic card reader. However, if the State uses an over-the-counter issuance system, the kiosk dispenses a bar coded receipt that can be exchanged at the express window of the DMV office for the new custom printed card. For States using central issuance, the kiosk produces an interim document/receipt for use until the secure card is received in the mail.

Data collected is transmitted via a secure encrypted line from the kiosk workstation to the DMV host server and database system where it is stored and managed by the State. Photos taken at the kiosk are purged from the machines after they are taken and transmitted to the central image server.

Eight L-1 kiosks will be made available across the state by the end of the month. Additional kiosks are expected to be installed in 2010.
