The police department in Ukiah, California recently announced a partnership with the Ukiah Valley Association for Habilitation to produce and distribute plastic ID cards for the developmentally disabled, according to the Ukiah Daily Journal. The cards will contain contact information in the event of an emergency.
The UVAH will make the cards for its members, but also plans to provide the plastic ID cards to other developmentally disabled people in the area. The Ukiah Police Department has donated nearly $2,000 for the production of the cards and use of ID card printers for the initiative.
"The idea is that in a crisis situation people are not thinking at their best," Police Chief Chris Dewey told the news provider. "This care could be available to anybody, but especially developmentally disabled [persons] so they could show police or law enforcement resources to help them."
ID cards used in unconventional circumstances have become increasingly popular. In Wales, young people who care for ill relatives or mentally disabled family members pushed the government last summer to issue ID cards they could use to excuse absences from school, according to the Western Mail.
