Students at Cambrian College in Ontario must present plastic ID cards when entering campus gym to avoid $2 fee.
Students at Cambrian College in Sudbury, Ontario must carry their school-issued plastic ID cards when using the campus fitness center or they will be charged $2 a fee to use the facilities, the Cambrian Shield – a campus news website – recently reported.
The school announced the fee after reports surfaced of people using the facility who do not attend the school or used to and still live in the area. Also, the school wants to encourage students to carry their plastic Photo ID cards at all time.
"I don’t believe it is fair because we are already paying to have access to the gym through our tuition and just because someone may forget their student card, they should either be able to look up that the person actually goes to Cambrian or have a different solution," Kelly Campeau, a student at the school, told the news provider. "Even though it is only $2, we are students and are constantly paying different fees which add up quickly."
Most universities in the United States and Canada now use plastic ID cards for access to building entry. The records provided by card readers recently helped police at Lehigh University arrest a man who used his card to burglarize several campus buildings.
