Students at the University of New Mexico will receive new plastic ID cards from the school next year.
The University of New Mexico recently announced that it will change the format of its students’ plastic ID cards and make them more technologically advanced prior to the next academic year. The school will issue the new cards to students upon their return to campus in the fall.
To raise awareness of the move, the school decided to open a contest for students to submit a design for the plastic ID cards. The winner’s design will be used on every card issued to students, staff and faculty.
The current Lobo Cards do not contain certain information crucial for students to conduct business on campus. For example, the student’s identification number is not on the card, and the information stripe technology on the back of the card is severely outdated. Currently, students can use their plastic ID cards for building entry and printer access, but not much else on campus.
Universities in the United States have recently announced new features added to school-issued plastic ID cards, including train and bus fare at the University of Cincinnati and library entrance at Florida State University.
