Building entry ID card records help police catch a burglar at Lehigh University.
Crime on college campuses is something that most universities accept as a inevitability, but universities that use plastic ID cards to monitor building entry are more likely to find the guilty than those who do not. LehighValleyLive.com recently reported that building entry records, secured by card readers, led to the arrest of a Lehigh University janitor who allegedly committed several burglaries at the school.
Jorge Deandrade, a university employee, is believed to have stolen more than $30,000 worth of laptop computers from students in dormitories and other university housing. University police used the records produced when students and employees swipe their plastic ID cards to enter buildings to find a suspect. Deandrade was implicated when his name reportedly appeared on the record of every theft site.
American Building Maintenance – the company Lehigh contracts to maintain the university – told police, according to the news provider, that Deandrade was not scheduled to be in any of the buildings during the time of the alleged thefts.
Universities that use plastic ID cards have found in recent months that the identification management system makes several aspects of campus life more convenient for the school. Georgia Institute of Technology recently adopted a system that allows students to purchase concessions at sporting events with their school-issued ID.
