Providence College students will soon be able to use their stored credit accounts, called PC Cash, at such popular off-campus destinations as CVS and two area pizzerias, according to a report from The Cowl, the school’s student newspaper.
The university announced the plan in February. Initially, the school planned to make the announcement prior to the start of the ongoing spring semester, but technical issues delayed the start of the program.
"Some of these businesses are worried about cost because it’s expensive to buy a card reader and pay transaction fees," Gene Robbins, director of the program, told the news provider. "However some businesses have reached out to us, including Chipotle, which is actually not too close to us, it’s in Cranston."
Students on campus are excited and believe that using the plastic ID cards to make purchases off campus will make life easier for them. The school also believes it will increase use of PC Cash at on-campus vendors.
Larger universities have used these programs for years, but smaller schools have began to do so to save money. Keene State College, a small state college in Keene, New Hampshire, recently announced that students can use their plastic ID cards to make purchases around campus.
