Students at Florida State University must now use their plastic ID cards to gain entry to the school’s library.

Students at Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida must now swipe their school-issued plastic ID cards to gain access to and leave the school library, according to the independent student newspaper the FSU News.

The card readers installed at all entrances and exits to the building were the final step in a massive renovation of the school’s library that began in May 2009. The school reopened the library to students on March 1, and they have enjoyed the more secure quarters along with increased study space and computer availability. The school also took measures to improve security of the building’s computer networks. Using any website not intended for academic use such as Facebook or YouTube requires a student username and password.

While the construction bothered some students – especially during mid-term and final exams – and took longer than expected, the campus community is happy with the results.

Students at Capital University learned of a similar project recently that will install card readers at the main entrance of all campus buildings. Students and staff will need plastic ID cards to enter buildings at all times.
