The Pennsbury School Board said actions by many teachers were “inappropriate.”
The Pennsbury School Board has approved a motion banning teachers from wearing protest buttons and lanyards in class in the midst of a continued union dispute over salaries, reports BucksLocalNews.com.
The site says the school board felt that the lanyards and pins were "inappropriate" and "unprofessional." The also condemned the teachers for exposing "captive audiences of impressionable students" to the conflict.
Many union members have been wearing custom lanyards and pins with "6/30" printed on them, according to the site. June 30 is the date that their union contract expires and when the school district’s budget must be approved.
BucksLocalNews.com also says the teachers’ union has also put up two billboards urging residents to pass a tax increase to help fund the school system.
The Bucks County Courier reports that the school district is facing a $2.2 million budget shortfall for next year. The paper says the school board voted down a motion asking for a pay cut from teachers to make up the budget gap, but has asked the union to accept a salary freeze for the next two years.
