Some Cincinnati students oppose adding debit card functions to student IDs
A day after the University of Cincinnati announced it would add debit card functions to student IDs through a partnership with PNC Bank, WCPO-TV says students have mixed feelings.
The new functions will be available with a new student ID card design being rolled out in the fall. All incoming freshman will be given one of the new cards, although linking it with bank information will be optional.
Student Caroline Shannon told the station, "I’ve lost one ID card already. I have enough problems keeping track of my other ID cards, so I probably wouldn’t use it as a debit card, ever."
Current students will have the option of whether or not to switch to the new design, which also serves as an access card for school buildings and a library card.
School officials also told WCPO that students will not be charged overdraft fees, and if they spend too much the debit functions will just shut down.
USA Today says that many schools are now adding debit card and other fuctions to their school ID cards because the deals with banks can bring in up to $1 million dollars a year.
