Student IDs at the University of Central Florida are now used for payments on the campus
The University of Central Florida recently upgraded its student ID cards to now additionally function as prepaid debit cards for campus activities and tuition payments.
The student ID card is now equipped with smart card technology for use as a payment method for laundry, vending machines, printing, on-campus restaurants, and even tuition, according to the school’s website. The school had converter machines installed around campus for the implementation of the program. Students can swipe their existing ID cards on the converter machines to send the information to an online account where they can manage their funds.
The school enhanced its ID cards in response to requests from students and parents for the ability to manage account transactions in real time.
Officials that worked to implement the new system recently explained that the school is trying to catch up with modern demands for technology. Tammy Kidder, UCF card services manager, told the school’s newspaper "we’re in such a fast-paced world that people want to be able to see information quickly."
"We are driven by what our users want," she added.
Other universities have been increasing their student ID cards’ capabilities. The University of Missouri also recently announced a $450,000 investment in a new system for student ID cards.
