Students at the University of Maryland, College Park, claim that they would be more likely to use campus vending machines if they were capable of accepting payment from their campus plastic ID cards, according to the Diamondback, the school’s independent student newspaper.
Young people, especially college students, do not carry cash as much as they used to, so allowing students to purchase drinks and snacks with accounts linked to their plastic ID cards makes spending more likely.
Most students go to campus convenience stores to purchase food for their day or their dorm room because the stores allow students to pay with their university ID cards.
"I only ever used [the vending machine] with my swipe. It was so convenient, I don’t think I put cash in it once because they were everywhere," Lauren Mennen, a student at the university, told the news provider. "I always saw people swiping their cards. It just made it so much easier because not everyone has cash on them, but the cards are always with you."
The university administration reported that it has considered implementing card readers on the machines in response to the article, but tells students not to expect any changes in the immediate future, according to CR80News.com.
