Students at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill recently received new plastic ID cards that made certain tasks around campus – including dining, stored-credit transactions, printing and building entry – more reliable and secure, according to CBord, the provider off the ID cards.
The system has been especially valuable to the campus community because of the improvements it has made to campus security. The card readers are capable of instantly alerting campus security any time there is a breach.
The university has also recently installed biometric scanners at sporting events to allow student to enter the campuses sporting venues without an ID card.
"We provide a safe and secure means of performing financial transactions across campus," Jim Clinton, director of the program at UNC, said. "We provide access to academic and administrative buildings and manage parking access for the entire university. We manage camera surveillance, gym memberships, and a host of other activities."
The University of Iowa announced a similar system early in the year. Like UNC, Iowa installed the system to increase security across campus but has found that the cards make several aspects of campus life easier for students.
