Student ID cards at a university in Lebanon will be updated to make debit card purchases

A Lebanese university has recently updated its student ID cards to include multiple functions for access and payment.

The Holy Spirit University of Kaslik has begun its new campus-wide plastic ID card upgrade project, with plans to add smartcard functions for access keys and debit cards. The payment function will link directly to students’ personal bank accounts and can be used freely anywhere debit cards are accepted.

Regarding the technology, the university’s IT director Ziad Eid said "it proved to be the best on the market."

After testing the technology, he called the school’s plastic card program "the most advanced radio frequency campus card system in the Middle East."

The school has already completed the first part of the project – installing connectivity between buildings and campus entrances to ensure the same accessibility with student ID cards. The card reading terminals will be deployed next year.

Large universities in the U.S. have also recently begun testing student ID cards for access to campus buildings and residence halls. The University of Virginia has been running a pilot program on a key-card and PIN number solution to improve security at its student residence buildings.
