Students at Vanderbilt University recently learned that the will be able to use their plastic ID cards to pay for cab rides when the fall semester begins.
Vanderbilt University student government president Lori Murphy recently informed her fellow students that their Commodore Cards, college plastic ID cards issued by the Nashville, Tennessee college, will be accepted by taxi cabs throughout the city when the fall semester begins, according to InsideVandy.com.
The system replaces the current payment method of Cab Cash, which students use solely to pay for cab rides in the city. Three cab companies in the area have agreed to install the card reader systems into their vehicles. TaxiUSA, the company that owns the area cabs, will pay for the systems to encourage taxi use among students. The program also aims at limiting drunk driving by students at the university.
"This initiative will not only allow students to pay for their cab ride using their Commodore Card, but they will be able to split it with up to three people," Murphy told the news provider.
"With Vandy Vans and with cabs we just want to make sure that Vanderbilt students are kept safe and their lives are convenient," she continued.
Allowing students to pay for public transportation with plastic ID cards is popular at colleges and universities throughout the United States. American University is currently testing a system that allows students to board trains in Washington, D.C. with their school IDs.
