Donna Ortiz, a deputized court security officer in La Salle County, Illinois, believes that state-issued plastic ID cards for all attorneys in the county would help bolster court security and prevent against intruders, according to MyWebTimes.com.
Ortiz thinks maintaining a secure environment is crucial for courts, especially when dealing with violent criminals. Working with the state for years, Ortiz knows many of the attorneys who walk in and out of the building. Still, it’s impossible to keep track on every person who walks in and out of the courthouse, she said.
Court officials have acknowledged and considered the improvements possible by implementing plastic ID cards. Some believe the presence of badges makes court workers targets for potential intruders, however Ortiz maintains that requiring an ID allows her to pay more attention to those without them.
"I’m here to maintain public order for all staff and visitors who have business here. Making people who work here wear their ID badges would be a help to everyone here," Ortiz told the news provider.
Large volume plastic card printer systems have become more affordable in recent years as government buildings, workplaces and schools have opted to use IDs for building and room entrance among other things.
