Alachua County in Florida recently announced a program that allows people to get certified copies of their birth certificates at area Department of Motor Vehicles Locations.
Florida, like most states, has made it more difficult for people to receive and renew plastic ID cards in recent years due to concerns over terrorism and illegal immigration. For many without a birth certificate, it can be impossible to get a driver’s license, passport or any other form of ID. To help people in that situation, the Alachua County Health Department recently announced that a member of the department will be stationed at Department of Motor Vehicles locations to provide certified copies of birth certificates, according to the Gainesville Sun.
In most cases, pulling up a copy of a birth certificate will take no more than five to 10 minutes, according to the news provider. Initially, the plan only applied twice a week, but the health department decided to make it permanent on January 1.
"Everybody is going to have to renew their license, and that’s going to take time. This is to help with the influx," Shirley Allen, chief registrar of the Health Department, told the news provider.
Also in Florida, a group of homeless advocacy organizations recently sponsored an event that helped several people get plastic ID cards or locate birth certificates needed to apply for them.
