The U.S. green card, issued to immigrants legally allowed to work and live in the country, was recently recognized as one of the top ID programs in the world
Citing its security, durability and adoption rate, research firm Frost & Sullivan judged the U.S. Permanent Resident Card, commonly referred to as the "green card," as the leading government ID card in the world.
The firm collected and compared 13 government ID programs from across the globe, including ID security from Malaysia, Costa Rica and the Italian National Police. The programs compared the smartcard ID technology for security standards, utility, durability, range of applications and public demand to decide which was most efficient.
Experts recently highlighted the security standards of the "green card" that other plastic ID card programs should adopt.
"Our report identified a representative sample of government ID projects based on a multi-faceted ranking system," said Shyam Krishnan, industry analyst at Frost & Sullivan and author of the report. "The U.S. Green Card scored particularly well due to the extreme levels of security, large data storage capacity, the presence of an RFID chip and the flexibility provided by its optical security media."
The approval of the "green card" signifies success of an ID program employed for immigration purposes by the United States government since 1940.
