After President Barack Obama’s recent speech on immigration reform, a White House representative spoke about the importance of ID security in the green card program
Following a recent speech from President Barack Obama, a White House official addressed the need to maintain secure identification standards of the country’s green card policy.
Cecilia Munoz, director of White House intergovernmental affairs, addressed an issue brought up by the President regarding the current identification standards of the country’s plastic ID card program for immigration. In a press event after the President’s speech, Munoz explained the current backlog in green card issuance, which has forced an estimated 10-year wait to issue a green card. The backlog has been created because of a current limit on the number of the plastic cards the government is allowed to issue each year, she said.
While Munoz did sympathize with the current difficulty of reaching legal citizenship for many immigrants, she stressed the need for the government to maintain its identification standards to prevent illegal immigration.
"If people are separated from their husbands or wives, they might come to this country and overstay their visa and be here illegally because there is a long wait or no other way," she said.
Many Americans have looked to the Obama administration to implement federal regulations on immigration policy in response to the ongoing controversy regarding Arizona’s immigration ruling earlier this year.
