York, Nebraska’s town government recently declined to purchase plastic ID cards for all workers after the town’s assessor proposed the idea.

When York, Nebraska assessor Ann Charlton requested that the town consider purchasing plastic ID cards for all town employees that spend considerable time working in the field, she thought she had proposed a good idea. But, according to the town’s York News Times, the town government and employees believed the city should not spend money on it.

The town’s top officials decided that any department that wants to use plastic ID cards for its employees was allowed to do so, but the department of the employee had to pay for them.

"The Employee Handbook Committee met on this one and decided that if an individual department wants to wear name badges, they can get their own," committee commissioner Kurt Bulgrin told the news provider. "So our action is no action. A department can get the identification badges for their employees if they want them."

Requiring workers that spend time working in the field or on public property to wear plastic ID badges is common in many states. The Delaware state senate is currently considering a bill that would require salesmen that travel from door to door to present an ID card to prospective customers.
