The Smart Card Alliance has announced its support for the Obama administration’s online identity-theft solution
The Smart Card Alliance recently announced its endorsement of the Obama administration’s recent plan to improve the country’s protection from online identity theft.
The National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace will provide regulations to implement secure online ID technology for the country’s citizens as well as for online transactions in healthcare, social security administration and immigration reform. The plan is designed to leverage multiple identity protection technologies and will seek assistance from a number of private stakeholders in the secure identification industry.
The Smart Card Alliance’s endorsement also pointed out techniques and solutions the government can consider. A definition for the identity ecosystem for digital transactions was recommended as a top priority for the successful execution of the plan. The Alliance also focused on increasing security for high-value identity transactions within the country’s online networks, including smartcard technologies such as biometric identification and public key infrastructure credentials.
A recent security breach in Utah’s state government highlighted the need for identification security in immigration reform. State records were leaked and published on a list of alleged illegal immigrants in the state, which was distributed to media outlets and politicians and invaded the privacy of 1,300 residents.
