The United States may implement a new biometric ID card, a recent article from Time claims.

New York Senator Chuck Schumer and South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham presented blue prints for a new biometric ID card to President Barack Obama. The new biometric IDs would contain finger prints and other physical data. As an attempt to curb illegal immigration, the plastic ID cards would be necessary to legally secure a job in the United States. The new ID system would also standardize the employment process, which currently has 24 documents, differing on a state-by-state level.

"If you say [illegal immigrants] can’t get a job when they come here, you’ll stop it," Schumer told the Wall Street Journal.

The costs associated with buying a card scanner have some businesses rallying against the plan. They claim that illegal immigrants will just flock to businesses that don’t use the machines, while honest citizens will have to pay extra for the plastic ID card.

In 2009, Canada also implemented similar measures to cut down on illegal immigration and boost border control, according to an extensive report filed by the Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
