The discount card is accepted at nearly 60,000 pharmacies nationwide

A free prescription discount card operated through the National Association of Counties, and administered by CVS/Caremark, is now available in Minnesota’s St. Louis County.

The NACo says the program saves consumers an average of 23 percent on prescription drug purchases, and guarantees that people will receive the lowest rate.

The ID cards are accepted at nearly 60,000 pharmacies nationwide, including CVS, Walgreens, Rite-Aid, and Wal-Mart along with many other independent companies.

Program advocates say the program has no age, medical or income requirements, and since its start in 2004 has saved consumers more than $205 million.

The cards "offer significant savings for uninsured or under-insured residents of our county," says county administrator Kevin Gray.

The Duluth News Tribune reports that some St. Louis administrators were hesitant to join the program at first, saying it would hurt smaller local pharmacies.

Those pharmacies questioned the actual savings under the program, and noted that many other programs offered similar or better discounts.

The NACo card is now available in over 1,200 of the nation’s 3,068 counties.
