ID-based swipe systems can be confusing at times, but technological solutions are usually swift. That was the case at Penn State University recently as some students left a sporting event when their new swipe cards, containing ticket information, did not work.
The plastic ID cards were implemented as part of an innovative smartcard system that sees student ticket holders’ swiping the cards to gain entrance to school sporting events. The ID-based system allows for quick entry into the games, instead of requiring students to stand in long lineups. All ticket holders’ identification and ticket informtion is entered onto the ID card before the game, so that students move quickly through the gates.
The school’s student union has already discussed resolutions to the technological problems students encountered with the new swipe card system. Also, despite the problems, Associate Athletic Director Greg Myford told the Daily Collegian that 95.5% of students gained entry on the first swipe and that there will not be any extreme changes made to the system.
