A new ID badge system will improve hospital security
Beaufort Memorial Hospital in Beaufort, South Carolina is instituting a new after-hours security system using a photo ID badge system.
Visitors entering the building will be asked to show identification to a security officer, have their photo taken, and then wear a disposable photo ID badge showing who they are, and where in the hospital they are going.
"Patient safety is our main goal with this system," said security director Dough Rhodin. "We want to make sure visitors who are here after visiting hours are authorized to be here."
The system will only be used after regular hospital hours, when the hospital’s main entrance is locked and visitors must enter through the emergency department.
While the badges are thrown away after the visitor leaves, their photo will remain on file in a database, which will also serve as a record of visitors.
The Island Packet reports that the database will also allow security officers to better keep track of anyone who has caused any problems during a previous visit.
The ID badge system was paid for by a grant from the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control.
