Starkville students will be required to wear photo ID badges
The Starkville, Mississippi school board has voted to require that photo ID badges be worn by students in grades 6 through 12, along with all teachers, staff, volunteers and visitors while they are on school grounds or at school events.
School officials say the badges will be worn around the neck, and the Starkville Daily News says procedures regarding these changes to the dress code will be included in student and employee handbooks.
School superintendent Judy Couey told the paper that prototypes of the new badges have already been developed, and will incorporate a student’s school picture, and a bar code for identification.
According to the Starkville Daily News, Couey said that the bar code technology will make the badges difficult to counterfeit.
The Starkville Daily News reports that students who fail to display their ID badge will be subject to discipline, and that all visitors and volunteers will be given a badge when they check in at the school’s main office.
The badges will also be required for all after-school activities including dances and other student events.
The new policies come into effect as the school district faces $2 million dollars in budget cuts for the upcoming school year due to a reduction in state aid.
