Student ID Cards Used to Help Haiti

Plastic student ID cards at George Washington University were used for a good cause on Jan. 22, 2010. That’s because students at the school developed an easy way for faculty, staff and students to donate towards the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti.

All that faculty, staff and students had to do was simply swipe their plastic identification cards (called the GWorld campus cards) to help those who were affected by the devastating earthquake, which occurred on Jan. 12. The plastic cards are cash-linked and school officials set up five locations around campus to allow students, faculty and staff to swipe and donate. The swiping of the magnetic plastic cards then allowed the donors to enter the amount they wished to contribute.

One hundred per cent of the proceeds will be split evenly between the American Red Cross and Project Mediashare, an independent nonprofit organization that provides healthcare to Haitian people.
