Police are distributing lanyards to help reduce the theft of purses
The Portsmouth Business Crime Reduction Partnership has teamed up with local police to distribute free lanyards to city residents in an effort to crack down on theft, according to the Portsmouth News.
The News says that the lanyards, when worn around the neck, can be attatched to a bag or purse, and help alert shoppers if thieves try to steal the bag.
The Crime Reduction Partnership says that police officers will be working to distribute the lanyards to vulnerable shoppers. Area residents can also contact police to obtain one.
Officials told the News that shoppers should also work to protect themselves by making sure they wear their bag’s strap across the front of their body, keep their bags closed, and park in well-lit areas of store parking lots.
The Safer Portsmouth Partnership says that area officials have placed a heavy emphasis on stopping crime over the past few years. The partnerships says crime in the area was reduced by 8 percent in 2009, and has fallen a total of 15 percent since 2007.
