Coventry City Football Club is issuing smartcards to season ticket-holders

Soccer fans in Coventry, England will be offered multifunctional, contactless smartcards to replace the team’s season ticket system, according to the Coventry Telegraph.

The plastic cards will be available to Coventry City Football Club season ticket-holders and will have features that allow entry into soccer matches and payment at food stalls. The system was implemented to expedite the movement of soccer fans into the team’s home stadium, Ricoh Arena, and eliminate long lines at food vendors’ stalls. The team’s authorities are introducing the smartcard system after the cashless payment system for season tickets has been successfully integrated.

Officials with the team recently explained the new programs that make it easier to attend the team’s matches. Stephen Ebanks, head of information and event sales for the Coventry City Football Club, told the Coventry Telegraph "the combined season ticket and cashless system has successfully been in operation for two seasons now and so we felt it was the right time to replace all the old season ticket cards with up-to-date versions."

High attendance rates for soccer games have prompted other organizations to expedite service with smartcard systems. South African transportation authorities recently finished development on their subway and train system, ensuring smartcards were ready for the increased travel volumes that came with this year’s World Cup.
