The school began the testing with selected members of the student body and faculty and will expand the program if the feedback from the trial is positive. GW students, however, cannot expect the same measure of convenience as their plastic ID cards are not compatible with the DC Metro System. The school did look into the matter, but it does not believe a shift is cost effective at the moment.

"Two [cards] were made quickly to make sure they actually work, one of which I have. Six will be tested by AU staff, and the remaining 12 will be for student use," American University student body president Andy MacCracken told the news provider.

Universities throughout the U.S. have looked into ways to make their students’ ID cards more widely used. The Cowl, the student newspaper at Providence College, recently reported that PC students can use their school IDs to make purchases at off-campus businesses.
