Biometrics are being increasingly used in driver’s licenses

New analysis from Frost and Sullivan shows revenues for emerging biometric technologies could reach $9.44 billion dollars by 2014.

That figure marks a significant growth since 2007, when the market earned revenues of $2.6 billion.

FindBiometrics.com says the industry’s rapid growth has been based on the need for greater security to help deal with issues including illegal immigration and fraud.

But Frost & Sullivan research analyst Neelima Sagar told FindBiometrics.com that many of the most profitable programs have focused on using ID cards to help companies monitor employee access in buildings.

Heavy funding in research and development has also created a range of different products that fit the needs of a growing security market.

Sagar told the site that those developments will "establish biometric technologies as an integral component of national security and defense strategies."

Findbiometrics.com says that while applications like fingerprint recognition are increasingly popular for products like laptop computers because of its cost-effectiveness, the price of technologies like facial and eye scanning is set to decline, and will also play a major role in security.

The government-run Biometrics.gov says that many companies have begun steering away from using passwords to increase security.
