Charleston, SC parking meters now have smartcard payment systems
Transportation authorities in Charleston, South Carolina recently extended its smartcard parking payment system to include parking meters throughout the entire city, according to a report from the Charleston Regional Business Journal.
The technology allows drivers to scan a prepaid plastic card on all 1,840 of the city’s parking meters, while still providing the option to pay with coins. The city also recently enabled a second location, the visitor center, for purchasing and re-filling the parking smartcards. The recent development of the smartcard program, which was implemented last year on about half of the city’s parking meters, extended the system’s capabilities by installing card readers on the city’s remaining parking meters.
City officials recently explained the cost-saving features of the parking meter smartcard system. Hernan Pena, director of traffic and transportation in Charleston, told ABC4 news in Charleston "the nice thing about the card, as opposed to change, if you have time left on the meter you can reinsert the card and the meter will refund unused time value on the card."
Other cities have introduced smartcards to make transportation more convenient for their residents. San Francisco recently finished developing its Clipper smartcard system for bus and subway stations travel.
