A candidate for Connecticut’s governor wants to implement smartcards as part of its transportation overhaul

Ned Lamont, a candidate in the race for governor in Connecticut, is pushing for a smartcard payment program as part of his recent proposal for an overhaul on public transportation at the state’s border with New York, according to a report from the News Times.

The potential smartcard program is planned to be implemented as a payment method for train and bus services in the state. The transportation proposal calls for implementing a regional authority to bring in federal funding for transportation changes such as a new smartcard payment system. Lamont has also spoken about improving the state’s railroad line across the state border and into New York.

Lamont recently addressed the state’s need for convenient transportation solutions. "Connecticut is the gateway to New England," he said, according to the News Times. "That’s a great strategic advantage that’s become a disadvantage because we’ve allowed our transportation infrastructure to deteriorate."

Smartcards have been introduced to improve security and convenience in other massive transportation overhaul projects. The South African government recently developed its rail service in time for the World Cup tournament and implemented smartcards to help facilitate travel for its vast user base.
