Drivers in Queensland, Australia are still waiting to receive their smartcard driver’s licenses
Drivers in the Queensland state of Australia are becoming frustrated while they wait for their new smartcard driver’s licenses to be mailed to them.
State authorities have issued paper receipts to drivers in the area because the program has been delayed beyond the deadline for updating driver’s licenses. The plastic ID cards are expected to take two weeks to reach drivers who, in the meantime, will use paper receipts to prove they are licensed to drive. The program has posed other problems, including a pending price increase for upgrading the card from $64.33 this year to $133.84 by 2014.
Area transportation officials have criticized the current state of the smartcard program for its security issues. Transport spokeswoman Fiona Simpson told the Brisbane Times "it doesn’t seem very secure."
"Here they are trumpeting how they’ve got [this] real secure driver license system but, by the way, you can drive around for two weeks with a little paper receipt which will be considered your driver’s license," she added.
The smartcard driver’s licenses are being implemented in response to a successful trial program for the plastic cards that began in May.
