Students riding school buses in Dubai will be given smartcards to make sure they all enter and leave the bus at the appropriate times
A new smartcard system will improve safety for students travelling on school buses in Dubai, according to a report from the National.
Education and transportation authorities organized the program for Dubai’s largest school bus operator. The program will implement smartcards to the 40,000 students who travel on the School Transport Services’ 800 buses every day. Authorities are looking forward to the program as it ensures students get to and from school safely by forcing them to swipe their plastic ID cards when they enter and exit the bus.
ML Augustine, managing director of School Transit Services, told the National "we can’t take the risk of even one child being left behind."
Regarding the new technology, he added "we will immediately know if a child has not got out of the bus, maybe because he fell asleep."
The smartcard system will also store travel information such as speed and braking, to ensure safe driving habits of the area’s bus drivers.
The school bus smartcards highlight the benefits educational authorities can take from using the technology for student security. Dubai’s program coincides with a recent investigation of the death of a young girl who appeared to have been locked in a school minivan in Qatar.
