How are ID cards printed?

There are two types of card printers in the market today. The more affordable ones are direct-to-card printers. They print your card artwork directly on the surface of blank PVC cards through a process called dye sublimation. Retransfer printers, on the other hand, are slightly more expensive but they offer many benefits like true full-bleed printing as well as color-accurate and photo-realistic printouts. Retransfer printers print your card artwork onto the reverse side of a transparent film that is then thermally applied to the card. This method seals the printed image between the card and the film.
