Why are Color Ribbons Labeled with YMCKT or YMCKO?

The letters YMCK all refer to the colors Yellow, Magenta, Cyan, and Black panels of a printer ribbon. Depending on the brand, the ‘T’ or ‘O’ indicates a protective top coat or overlay for the color cards.

This depicts the colors on a full-color ribbon to print full color cards. All colors come from yellow (Y), magenta (M), and cyan (C) panels. You can see these colors blocked on the ribbon.

The ‘K’ is a black panel used typically for text.

Depending on the brand, the ‘T’ or ‘O’ indicates a protective top coat or overlay for the color cards. This is an optional panel for full-color ribbons, but it is recommended. The top coat will prevent your card colors from fading over time and protect the card from rubbing effects.

If you have a double sided printer, you may not want to print full color on both sides and only require black text on the backside. In this case, you would look for a ribbon that is YMCK-K or YMCKT-KT/YMCKO-KO (if you would like a top coat).
